Playing Devil's Advocate

My folks were watching the news the other night, listening to 60 Minutes and growing steadily more upset about the people trading their morals for a paycheck, as they falsify bank documents. Keep in mind that my father has been working the same job for the past 40+ years and my mother is currently voluntarily unemployed.

I speak up, and mom is suddenly very disappointed in me for saying that "you can't buy food or pay rent with morals." As if she doesn't know anyone who has actually done that! She forgets her sister, who was asked to cook some books during her time as an accountant, and actually did it (but kept meticulous records of everything just in case it showed signs of backfiring).

Now I can't even look for alternative in playing devil's advocate, a position my mother has long monopolized.
