NMH: Jan 1 - Public Domain Day

For a complete list of NMH Events, visit the NMH Calendar, or you can find all NMH posts (in order of posting) here.

January first is a day of celebration in many cultures, most of them either for the start of the new year or the end of the party for the celebration of the previous year.

For artists, especially those who use resources from a variety of sources, January first is its own day of celebration: it's the day that copyrights expire.

While the US has no formal announcement of this day (no surprise, with all the struggle we have with corporations fighting tooth and nail to keep ahold of everything under their umbrella that they can, even if they have no plans of ever reviving it again), it is celebrated in Switzerland, Italy, Israel, Macedonia, and France.

So if you're an artist, sounds like any one of those countries would be a great place to live.
