On Optimism: Of Which I Have None

It's not so much that I've been having an enormous streak of bad luck most of my life, it's the fact that I'm a pessimist combined with that that makes it so dreadful. A pessimist with good luck expects it to end at any moment, an optimist with good luck expects it to never end, and an optimist with bad luck sees a light at the end of the tunnel.

A pessimist with bad luck knows that while there might be light at the end of the tunnel, it's probably either a skylight or another train.

Don't get me wrong, I've not the worst kind of pessimist which is always expecting the worst and making self-completing prophecies. No, I'm a realist pessimist. I know how bad things can be, and how unlikely they are to get that bad, but I also expect the more likely things to happen.

Combine that with a dread streak of bad luck, and you get a pessimist who's right more often than not, and that is a very depressing thought.
