On Writing: Telling The Story

I get a special feeling when I'm writing a story, and it contributes to why I dislike revising so much:

I feel like the story isn't even in my hands at all, but the characters have chosen to reach out to me and tell me their story, and no-one else. In that way, revising heavily  is akin to telling someone their auto/biography isn't written well enough, even as much as they hope that the little anecdotes that they tell you are copied down word for word.

When you really get down to it, none of us really own any story that we write, even non-fictional ones. They all belong to the characters. Even when we were a character ourselves, we are a different person than we were when the story was happening, so we aren't that same identical person anymore.
