Metacognition: Another Awakening

"For vast majority of women indifference equals hate." - moroi [link]

Misogyny is the hatred of, contempt for, or prejudice against women or girls. - Wikipedia [link]

There's a lot of hate in this world. I've tried different ways of dealing with it firsthand, and none of them seem to be terribly successful. But I've been recently educated that the problem with my approach is trying to get others to change.

I'm not an inspirational leader or a brilliantly charismatic fellow. I don't lead. Whatever leaders have that makes them such, I don't seem to have it.

So instead of trying to move what I can't move, instead of trying to shift the mountain with my own, lonely effort, I've been shown an alternative.

To move myself instead.

Show me one who is sick and yet happy, in peril and yet happy, dying and yet happy, in exile and happy, in disgrace and happy. Show him me... Nay you cannot show me a finished Stoic; then show me one in the moulding, one who has set his feet on the path. ...It is a soul I want; let one of you show me the soul of a man who wishes to be at one with God, and to blame God or man no longer, to fail in nothing, to feel no misfortune, to be free from anger, envy, and jealousy...
        - Epictetus, from The Discourses of Epictetus, Chapter 19 [link]

I haven't had much opportunity to study Stoicism, so I don't know yet if that is indeed the path for me.

Further down the thread, moroi concludes that "Actually not caring, well, that's the hard part." I've mentioned offhandedly before of my difficulties with apathy. Specifically, that my stress response tends towards it. In the "flight" or "fight" I'd more likely "forget it" (for lack of a better "f" phrase pertaining to apathy). I'd like to think I've got something of a head start on that one.

But the rest of the threads on that post start to sound dangerously revolutionary (or propaganda-esk, depending on who you ask) the further down you read, so I'm going to stop here, think about it some more, and maybe come back in a few months to touch on it again.

In the meantime, here's one more snippet from the thread:

At least from what I've gathered an 'end game' to their philosophy would be walking into the woods for a few days and then building a cabin somewhere and living a fulfilling life of self-sufficiency separate from the rest of society... - redditardation [link]

This world and its politics (the current US president notwithstanding) are turning into a very scary place if you think about it too much. I'm starting to wonder if this isn't a very good idea.
